What is your play about?

The Vengeance of the Shrew is about classic literary characters – including The Taming of the Shrew’s Kate, The Merchant of Venice’s Shylock, Lady Macbeth, the Wife of Bath, and Frankenstein’s Monster – who are tired of their canonical lot and decide to shake up the established order.

What genres does your play fall under?

Vengeance is a farcical comedy.

Why should this play be made into a show?

In addition to being thigh-slappingly hilarious (in my admittedly biased opinion!), my play tackles the question of how to fit beloved literary figures and the settings they inhabit and make them relevant to the 21st century – and it’s told through their perspective.

How would you describe this script in two words?

Modern Shakespeare!

What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

I watched the original Star Wars trilogy so many times, my mother had to re-record them due to fears of me wearing out the VHS tapes they were on.

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I started working on this play ten years ago.

How many stories have you written?

I have lost track of how many stories I’ve typed out – I’ve written first drafts of several novels, screenplays, and television pilots, and I’ve polished the ones I kept coming back to re-read (after all, if I want to read it again, someone else will want to read it the first time!).

What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

Bruce Springsteen’s “Backstreets.” Born to Run was the first album I remember listening to in full as a child, and that song as well as “Jungleland” amaze me with their composition and the raw power of their lyrics every time.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

I was in school for most of the time I was writing it, and I have a very limited ability to multitask. I completed it in fits and starts.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am an avid skier in the winter and a climber of 14,000-foot mountains in the summer. I have summitted 22 fourteeners: 21 in Colorado plus California’s Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the U.S. south of Alaska.

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I’d gotten a notification that my play’s logline had been selected to receive special attention for the submission. The feedback I received was thoughtful and informative.

What is your screenplay about?

Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

Peace Pledge is a gripping and heart-felt story about standing up for what you believe in, even against all the odds. It is also a tale of redemption, love and the power of the human spirit. Peace Pledge is timely with the centenary commemoration of the end of WWI on the horizon (and the 80th anniversary of the beginning of WWII); the story becomes more relevant every day with the escalation of military spending and worldwide violence.

How would you describe this script in two words?

heart-warming, uplifting

What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I started researching it in 2012 and have worked on it along with other projects since then.

How many stories have you written?

I have written about a dozen stage-plays, some of them award-winning. “Still Life With Nudes” is a comedy about seniors who stage a sit-in at a contemporary art gallery in protest when their full-length nude self-portraits were rejected. It won the National Playwrighting Award and several other awards. I’ve also penned three award-winning screenplays, including “Peace Pledge,” which received Honorable Mention in the Euroscript Competition, and “The Wonder,” a finalist in the British Independent Film Festival, as well as half a dozen children’s stories, one, “Marissa and the Mountains,” to be published by Simply Read next year.

What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

Universal Soldier has been a long-time favourite.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Information about the Peace Pledge Union has been buried in history and so it took considerable digging to piece together the peace story.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am passionate about social justice issues, particularly fighting threats to the environment where I live in B.C.. I also enjoy canoeing, camping, and travelling with my family.

You entered your screenplay via FilmFreeway. What has been your experiences working with the submission platform site?

It has been great!

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

A friend had entered and told me it was worthwhile. I was elated at the encouraging, articulate, insightful feedback and inspired to make further revisions to make this the best script possible.

Attempting the precise flyby of a black hole, untrained survivors of a lethal virus arrive in an uncharted region of our galaxy searching for refuge, but encounter an ancient race intent on eliminating outsiders.

What is your screenplay about?

A transport ship carrying settlers to a distant planet heads towards a black hole. A virus contracted in the Centauri System has wiped out the crew and most of the passengers. Two survivors attempt to navigate the ship, but miss the planned flyby trajectory and end up in an uncharted part of the galaxy. Finally arriving at a habitable planet, William and Elizabeth land in separate escape pods far apart.

William tracks his missing wife, but discovers glucose processing plant run by Coel, one of a few remaining overseers left by an ancient race.William is drugged and wakes up next to the owner’s dead body. Accused of the killing, William is held hostage by the notorious overseer, Afon and learns that his wife may have been taken to the capital city Ronna to participate in a blood transfusion purported to save Domed, young leader of the planet’s native race and who has contracted a similar virus.

How does this screenplay fit into the context of this show?

When the idea for this story came to me, I knew it would be able to fit in nicely with the rest of the series. The conflict that arises from the three separate storylines converge in a way that I have definitely witnessed on the show before.

How would you describe this script in two words?

Trust family.

What TV show do you keep watching over and over again?

I have a problem with continuously re-watching, not only Modern Family, but also How I Met Your Mother. These two shows have great strengths in both writing comedy, and in writing characters we care about. I love seeing that in a comedy and hope to create something similar in my own writing.

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I started this screenplay in the Summer of 2016 while pursuing a Screenwriting Certificate from NYU. It took me about the entire summer, with the help of my professor and my fellow classmates, to establish a good first draft. From there it went through many revisions until it was in it’s strongest form by around the end of December.

How many stories have you written?

Although this is my first spec script that I have written, I’ve written and produced a number short films (one that has gone on to be nominated for Best Screenplay at some festivals), I’ve written a feature, and most recently I finished a Two-Act comedy play that will be produced and performed around the end of April.

What motivated you to write this screenplay?

Last Summer, before I even thought about writing this spec, I had been helping my father cut down trees around the yard. My mother begged him to hire professionals instead of doing it himself, but he thought it would save time and money. Well, a few days later as I was helping him cut down a rather large tree in our front yard, we miscalculated where it would fall and it ended up crashing into the top of our house. The A story of my script follows, almost exactly, this chain of events. After this occurred during the Summer, I had so many people telling that it would fit very well into an episode of Modern Family, so I decided to bring it to life.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

There were numerous obstacles that I faced when finishing this screenplay. It went through so many changes during my revision process and before even sending it to festivals, there was a point where I basically scrapped half of it and started over. The reason for this was due to the three complex storylines that intertwine throughout the script. I knew where I wanted them to go and how I wanted it all to end, however, it was getting them all to that point that had me scratching my head and scrapping rewrite after rewrite. In the end though, I feel that it came together very nicely.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I really enjoy doing anything that has to do with music. I play a number of instruments, including guitar and a little bit of piano, but I have recently got into the habit of trying to learn even more instruments. Most recently, I have picked up the drums and the trumpet.

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

Initially the biggest thing that made me want to enter this festival was the recorded performance of our written scripts if we were to win. After receiving my notes from the festival though, I would say that I now have two big reasons to submit to this festival again in the future. The notes I received were very well thought out and helped me immensely during my most recent revision of the script. The festival put a lot of effort into making the notes as thorough and helpful as possible.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

The best advice I could give other writers would be to power through. There are times where you might think that you need to take a break from your writing and step back, maybe giving yourself an hour or a week to think about the story and your characters before you continue. I know in my experience though, that an hour turns into five and a week can turn into a month. If you sit down and write out your story, no matter how terrible it might seem to you, just know that the revision will always be better. Revisions can’t happen though, unless you actually write the script.

SYNOPSIS:

Celeste Grey, a mentally-challenged 20-something girl, who has no ability to speak escapes from an institution after being raped by an associate of the institute. By fate, she ends up on a ranch with 50-something RUSS, whose wife had been institutionalized before committing suicide, and his handsome, self-centered adult son (GABE).

Unspoken is about a young woman who is mentally disabled and she finds her way to a ranch, where a man and his son take her in and care for her and her soon to be unborn child. While they are trying to hang onto their ranch, they come to realize that, while they thought they were helping her, she actually winds up helping them.

The genre is a drama.

2. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

This movie is very inspiring to a lot of people in this world. This woman who is lost, alone, deaf and is pregnant has no hope in the world. The hope she finds is in two people who would be the most unlikely candidates to take care of her. It goes to show that just because people have disabilities and can’t speak for themselves doesn’t mean that they are voiceless and that they don’t have a heart. They just might be the ones to save you, not the other way around.

The Man In The Iron Mask and The American President

5. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

This film has been completed for several years now, just waiting for the right opportunity.

6. How many stories have you written?

Over the course of 15 years I have written 20 films.

7. What motivated you to write this screenplay?

This story came about in regards to a family member who suffered a tragedy that resulted in her having extreme handicaps after giving birth to her second daughter. She can’t speak, she can’t feed herself or walk, but she is bright and very intelligent. She still has her mind and uses it to communicate to her family by using a letter board. Much like the main character, she suffers deafness and has to be treated much like a child. That is kind of what brought the story to a head.

8. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

The only obstacles that I faced while writing this, was the obstacles that I have faced with all of my films. I have been trying my best to get my work publicized and at times I felt like I was in a stalemate and that my films could never make it, but I realized that I was good enough and I knew this was a film that had a great message and it needed to be told, so I finished it. Along with the personal story that comes along with this story, I knew I had to do this, so I gathered all my courage and strength and told myself that this was one that will mean the most.

10. What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I was on Twitter and the account for the festival came up and I checked it out and decided to give it a try.

What is your screenplay about?

It’s about love and my story takes a different look at it. We all know the romances and the quest for perfection—but in my view, Love is made from all the parts we don’t even notice. My logline: “It’s all the grey that makes the glue.” There are no formulas, only the unseen exchange of vulnerabilities.

What genres does your screenplay under?

It’s a love story. A romance. Narrative Fiction.

Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

The images are good and it’s a fable and I think film is the best medium for story-telling.

How would you describe this script in two words?

Satiric. Sexy.

What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

Oddly enough, A Man for all Seasons and that’s because Paul Scofield’s performance is one of a kind. That was a long time ago, now I watch everything with Jeanne Moreau.

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

Much too long. I had a first reading of it 5 years ago. The script never seemed right to me and I’ve hammered and hacked away at it, getting rid of characters, adding others, removing entire scenes. I have to make this now because time’s running out and there has to be a statute of limitations on re-writes.

How many stories have you written?

Around 50.

What motivated you to write this screenplay?

Desire. At 69, I’m surprised how alive I still am and at the same time how much of my life is behind me. I wrote this to find a perspective for both the loss of and quest for Life that I feel with aging.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

I just had to get the script right for myself. That took a while and in that meantime, the hope always is that at some point you’ll get to where you have the confidence to make it happen.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Red Wine.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Writers who are dramatists, ie. not novelists, need to know the nature of scene-making—what can the actor’s performance bring, what can the editor do, what music is needed—you can’t just write, you have to create a piece that can be furthered by the brilliance of others. And don’t forget to be entertaining.
