Watch THE SAD CHAIR, 140 Character Short Story:
1) What is your very short story about?
The idea of a chair that whoever sits in it becomes sad and grieves came from a chair in my old flat that seemed to have that effect on the cats or humans who sat on it. It sort of took on that personality afterwards.
2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?
I love writing, but in my job as a coder I’m in a very different, highly logical mindset. The idea or me entering this was it seems like an interesting challenge and should inspire me to keep writing. I always thought that the idea of 140 Twitter characters harked back to the telegrams of old and this competition hooked into that idea for me.
3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?
I’m obsessed with The Blair Witch Project. I love the grainy, homemade feel of it and the fact that the actors were just as scared in real life as they looked on the film as the crew were terrifying them outside their tents at night!
4) How many scripts and stories have you written?
I always loved writing, and did a few creative writing modules at uni, and some creative writing classes a few years later. These helped me to get my ideas into more structured forms, and to help me learn how to cut out the waffle. I’d say I’ve probably got about 100 short stories, songs, poems or plays tucked away somewhere.
5) What artists would you love to work with?
Living artists
I am a massive Roald Dahl fan, not just his amazing children’s books but also his deliciously dark and twisted adult short stories.
6) What is your passion in life?
I never want to stop learning or trying new things, not for a second. I’m a bit of a thrill seeker. I love the sea, old pubs, writing, coding and creating. I always want to travel to new places, but even exploring where I live in the UK there are just so many quirky and wonderful places and islands to hop.
7) Any tips for other writers who want to write a 140 character short
story?
The short word limit actually helped to open my mind rather than restricting me. Think of how short and effective a haiku can be, and just notice something out of the window or across the room from you, start jamming on that then cut down afterwards.
