Novel performed by actor Geoff Mays

Get to know writer Lynn Steward:

1. What is your novel about?

A young woman who stays true to herself and perseveres.

2. Why should this novel be read by anyone?

An enjoyable and thoughtful story about overcoming personal and professional challenges that transcend any period.

3. How would you describe this story in one sentence?

At the cutting edge of women’s fashion in the 1970s, an underestimated young woman leaves a broken marriage and her lethal charm goes to work to remake retail, and herself, at New York’s most glamorous department store.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

The Artist

5. How long have you been working on this novel?

This novel is the second volume in a five book series that I started researching and outlining as a TV show four years ago.

6. How many stories have you written?

Two, but I have the synopses written for the three remaining in the series.

7. What motivated you to write this novel?

Four years ago, I wrote a TV pilot, and the synopses for five seasons, set in the fashion world of 1970s New York. I was told by professionals in the entertainment industry that the main character, Dana McGarry, needed more drama. I thought the best way to develop all the characters and plots, and test the public’s reaction, was to put each season into a novel. Dana McGarry has a nice fan-following so now I’m looking for a home for the show!

8. What obstacles did you face to finish this novel?

No obstacles because the story was developed and written for the TV show. I guess the one challenge was that I had to cut content and a few characters for the novel.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

For four years, I have been passionate about the development of the Dana McGarry TV series. I work on some aspect of the show every day.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I wanted exposure for the novels and the idea for a TV series set in the fashion world of 1970s New York.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Find a topic you love and start writing. Your passion will drive the story. Don’t worry about structure and style, a good editor will clean it up. Just get the story on the page!
