Watch the 140 Character Short Story: THE ALIBI:
Get to know writer Erik Wollschlager:
1) What is your very short story about?
I think the coolest thing about The Alibi is that the backstory is so open ended. It could be told by a jilted lover who can’t be the one to turn you in. Is it a brother who made one last promise: “I’ll throw the cops off of your trail, but don’t ever come back here again.” Maybe it’s a father, who knows it’s better give the cops exactly what they want, but can’t snitch on his son.
2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?
A writing blog that I follow on twitter posted the contest, and I thought, “Why not? I write meaningless tweets all of the time, so it seemed silly to pass on this opportunity.
3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?
Star Wars. The original trilogy. My son is going to be four soon, and it’s his favorite set of movies, too, so I’ve probably doubled up on my childhood viewing by watching with him.
4) How many scripts and stories have you written?
I haven’t written any scripts, really, and I haven’t written any fiction since high-school – nearly 20 years ago.
5) What artists would you love to work with?
I would think that working with just about anyone would be beneficial – everyone has some knowledge to impart, right? If I had to chose, I guess Hemingway. I know Joseph Campbell was more studious than creative, but I’d love to spend a few days with him. I could learn so much!
6) What is your passion in life?
I have a need to create. Sometimes, I can bury the need, but often, if I go too long without creating something, I get moody – easily frustrated, quick to snap. It’s like Dexter’s Dark Passenger, but with less fatal results.
7) Any tips for other writers who want to write a 140 character short story?
In the immortal words of Shia Labeouf, “JUST…DO IT!”
