A Kinda Life
by Denise Stephani
For Malala who was shot in the head and left for dead & all the women and girls in the Gender War
Has life been kind to you? He said
As her heart stopped and bled
She sighed and shook her head
If I could’ve I would’ve fled
Life sucks for us ducks
What’s bad for the goose is good for the gander
Life is angled for the power of the boys den
It’s hard to be the shoved out hen
If Sallys had equal money
Blokes would lose the power to control the honey
If Janes could have equal learning
Guys would feel their egos burning
For thousands of years they have kept us down
They have snatched and held the gender crown
Marys have smiled behind a tear and frown
But now us Jennies must turn it all upside-down
Has life been kind to you? He queried
You look so tired and wearied
No, she stuttered
To see it you must be kind
Most Johns push our struggles from their mind.
When we talk of rape
They say ‘Peel a grape’
When we say that we’ve been battered
They say: To listen would leave me shattered
Man-made Sheila pain
Is silenced for their gain
Has life been kind to you? She said
I wish I could lie inside your bed
And have your life instead
Not be the prey – who is left for dead
Life sucks for us ducks
What’s bad for the goose is good for the gander
Life is angled for the power of the boys den
It’s hard to be the shoved out hen
For thousands of years they have kept us down
And they have snatched and held the gender crown
Marys have smiled behind a tear and frown
But now us Jennies must turn it all upside-down
Has life been kind to you? He asked
Has life been kind?
