Watch the 140 Character Short Story: SAND
Story read by actress Maya Woloszyn
Get to know writer Jemma Pollari:
1) What is your very short story about?
Sand is about a woman, beautiful and desired, but untouchable. The male protagonist wants to love her, and wants to mean something to her, but she moves on, leaving him, and her other lovers, behind her in ruins.
2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?

My father took a photograph of me (photo here) walking on a sandblow; the idea came from the heat and expanse of sand, where any marks we make are covered over by the unfaltering wind. I was motivated to submit it to the festival after seeing the previous winners’ videos on YouTube – I love the idea that a whole narrative can be condensed to 140 characters.
3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?
Merlin (1998 mini-series, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sam Neill), The Princess Bride (1987), and The Labyrinth (1986).
4) How many scripts and stories have you written?
No scripts, but lots of stories. I am currently working on a number of short stories, and four novel-length projects, with most of my time spent on Kine, which is being edited into final draft form.
5) What artists would you love to work with?
Jason Rothenberg, because I want to know how to create plot and character to his transcendental standard.
6) What is your passion in life?
Science shows that the universe works in bizarre ways, and I write to explore the line of speculation between what is and what if.
7) Any tips for other writers who want to write a 140 character short story?
Revise, revise, revise: writing short means every word counts and must contribute to the story arc.
