The Color of Hunger

the color of hunger, a hue of desperation

hunger is grey
she draws hearts and initials on her assignments
hoping and praying one day
he’ll notice her

hunger is brown
all she had today was a
cup of coffee and a cigarette

hunger is yellow
the stars she sees
when her headaches are too much
she tells herself, “it’ll be worth it”

hunger is dark blue
the rivers that run vividly along her body today
she has to fit in that dress tomorrow
how else would she be beautiful?

hunger is pale
when the rivers can’t flow anymore
because they’ve created a huge puddle
on her bathroom floor

hunger is clear
the tears that roll down
her mother’s face at the graveyard
wondering where she went wrong

hunger is black
evil, following someone around all day
no matter how you squint you wouldn’t see
that hunger is just a shadow, constantly eating at me.
