Coral Blues
by Zitin Bhan

Somewhere deep below the blue seas

a coral sings

trapped in the eerie

that a pagan brings

sings of sorrow and peace

for that’s where she is

with everything yet hollow.

rings her trumpet

that from a celestial being she borrowed

to teach her from skies above

distant from her desolate dwelling

he came to alter her arduous living

disarmed her of her stinging cells

so all she could do is sing

and how she sang

on full moon nights

where distant travellers stopped to sigh.

she sang and sang till the stars would shine

while the rest like her continued to dine.

he taught her well

he taught it all

but forgot to teach

how she wasn’t to fall.

He did his job

and leapt into the skies

away from the coral

who forgot to smile

she sang still

for the stars still shine

she sang still

for the others still continue to dine

she sang still

as the sea is still blue

and she sang

for that’s all she knew.
