Get to know writer Paul Myerberg:
1. What is your screenplay about?
A PTSD soldier, living on the streets, finds his anonymity shattered when he saves a woman from assault.
2. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?
It’s themes of loneliness are universal as are the push-pull of love and violence.
3. How would you describe this story in one sentence?
An action/drama which takes a reclusive, PTSD soldier from solitude to taking the first steps back to a normal life with his family.
4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?
I have no idea. Films that pop to mind are everything from Alien to Lawrence of Arabia to Groundhog Day. All these were great in their own way.
5. This is a very tight, emotionally engaging and fun screenplay. How long have you been working on this screenplay?
6-8 months.
6. How many stories have you written?
Around 15.
7. What motivated you to write this screenplay?
I needed a new avenue in which to promote my work. I thought a short screenplay would be an ideal vehicle. Once I decided on an approximate length I started to think in terms of how to create a beginning, middle and end in such a short time. From there, subject matter. PTSD is an affliction I’ve delved into before, and in fact have a full-length screenplay, Skilled To Kill, about a PTSD character. Although Skilled To Kill is also an action/drama, it’s very different than this short.
8. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?
This went relatively easy. I was fortunate to get some outstanding feedback along the way from my wife, my ProSeries alumni group, and WILDsound. Good, non-destructive feedback is vital for me as a writer.
9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
Music. 🙂 120 years ago I was a singer-song writer, and all this time later I’m getting played in Spain, the UK and Europe, and am currently awaiting contracts on a re-release of an album of my songs. I sang and wrote under the name Paul Martin, and find music as exciting as writing screenplays, although on a different pallet.
10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?
WILDsound seems more in touch with the writer than other contest or festivals. Some contests are very arbitrary and it’s like shoving your work and money into a dark hole, never to be seen or heard from again. WILDsound’s feedback was succinct and identified the area that needed work, as well as gave me encouragement.
11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?
Keep writing. Keep going. Keep trying.
