TO KILL GANDHI by James M  Freeman

What is your screenplay about?

To save the life of the woman he loves, a disillusioned Calcutta gangster must assassinate Gandhi on the eve of Indian Independence.

What genres does your 1pg. short fall under?

Historical/Action/Drama.

Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

Using a distinctive historical background (Calcutta in the late 1940s), this screenplay highlights an enduring human dilemma: when, if ever, violence is justified.

How would you describe this script in two words?

Controversial & Insightful.

What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

“M.”

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

This is adapted from a feature screenplay (The Time of Killing), which took four years to write. The short script took about a month.

How many stories have you written?

I have written several other short scripts. I am a retired anthropology professor and non-fiction writer, whose book, “Hearts of Sorrow,” won an American Book Award.

What motivated you to write this screenplay?

My screenplays are based on my decades of research in India and Southeast Asia. My present screenplay (a fictional story) was inspired by the life history of a Calcutta gangster, which I collected more than forty years ago.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Unlearning the conventions of non-fiction writing.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Refugee children and their protection.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

If you have it in you to write, then write. Avoid naysayers. Pay attention to genuine critics, who will help you to improve.

THE WALKER by Stephen John Karnaghan

Get to know the writer:

What is your 1pg Short Story about?

The Walker is a story about how we all go through life not telling ourselves the truth. People go through life not living their true lives and let others dictate who we are and what we do.

What genres would you say this short story is in?

Philosophical

How would you describe this story in two words?

Be true

What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Koyaanisqatsi

How long have you been working on this story?

It takes me quite a while to finish a story and this one took me about three months.

Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

What motivated you to write this story?

While I was sick I started to think about I had not been true to myself and started the story from that point.

What artist would you love to have dinner with?

I would like to have dinner with Steve Reich. One of the turning points in my life was hearing “It’s Gonna Rain” for the first time. This piece is one of the greatest musical compositions of all time.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am driven to compose music that represents modern times.

What influenced you to enter the 1pg. Short Story contest?

This is a wonderful contest because I have always found that I wanted to write using only the necessary words of the story.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Be truthful to yourself about how good your writing is and edit, edit, edit.

I was very impressed with the customer service at WILDsound. I had a question regarding my entry this year and I was contacted back immediately. I like that in a contest. Also, I was given feedback from WILDsound on my script and what I received was extremely helpful and detail oriented and it assisted me greatly in crafting my rewrite. The feedback from Wildsound strengthened my script to the point where it’s placing better in other contests as well.
