SHORT Screenplay Reading – AFTERLIFE ESTATES, by Laina Burgess

Genre: Comedy

Key figures and gods from all of the world’s religions meet at the Afterlife Estates office to go over the year’s numbers.

Cast List:

Guru: James Dooley
Narrator: Val Cole
Allah: Gary Graham
Noah: John Fray

Get to know the writer:

 1. What is your screenplay about?

My screenplay is about the idea that perhaps the leaders of the major world religions work together inside a crappy office with a Dunder Mifflin vibe.

2. What genres does your screenplay fall under?

3. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

It’s smart and it’s funny, and it takes a satirical and unique look at something that none of us could possibly know anything about.

4. How would you describe this script in two words?

Charmingly Irreverent

5. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

Probably Bridesmaids.

6. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I worked on this screenplay for a few months.

7. How many stories have you written?

There’s no telling how many stories I’ve written. I’ve made a few short films, one feature length, and I’ve got several scripts in the works.

8. What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

For some reason I can’t quite fathom, “It’s All Coming Back” by Celine Dion is my eternal jam.

9. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

I wouldn’t say I faced many obstacles writing this screenplay. Perhaps my biggest challenge was pushing away the producer devil on my shoulder saying “How would you ever shoot this? You don’t have the budget to give Brahma all the arms he needs.” As a filmmaker, sometimes I get ahead of myself and forget to just enjoy the storytelling process.

10. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about my 3 year old beagle pup named Piper.

11. You entered your screenplay via FilmFreeway. What has been your experiences working with the submission platform site?

I’m relatively familiar with FilmFreeway, and I’ve found that it’s pretty user-friendly.
