What is your TV spec screenplay about DOCTOR WHO about?

The Doctor and Shona (last seen in the episode “Last Christmas”), find themselves in Bohemia during the Dark Ages. A tyrant, Lord Ivan, hoards a peculiar red crystal with telepathic powers called the Crimson. Wearing jewels made of Crimson, Lord Ivan and his followers collectively conjure a serpentine gestalt being from the darkest recesses of their minds: The Mara.

Possessed by The Mara, Lord Ivan quickly conquers all before him. He besieges the largest castle (and only cathedral) in the rival kingdom of Vladislav. The Doctor knows that walls, warriors and weapons are no match for the insidious, seductive spell of The Mara.

The Doctor and Shona rouse King Vladislav and his people to fight The Mara through very unconventional means – particularly for The Doctor. The world’s future truly rests on a hope and a prayer.

Why does this screenplay fit into the context of the show?

It’s a traditional good versus evil story with the odd bits of comedy and horror that you’d expect from Dr. Who. I wrote it for the 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi – who I think is fabulous – a throwback to the 70’s Doctors, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.

This story is very much in the mold of classic Doctor Who. You have a historic setting that is disrupted by the presence of a perfidious alien – oh, and then there’s The Mara and a mysterious red crystal. Seriously though, The Mara was one of my favourite Who monsters from the 80’s and I am surprised it has not reappeared on TV (yet). The companion Tegan’s experience with the “evil dream snake” is what made her my favourite during the Peter Davison years.

We all know The Doctor’s companion is a surrogate for the audience and a great companion makes for a great Who story. I chose a character from a recent Christmas special – Shona McCullough (played wonderfully by actor Faye Marsay)– because I immediately saw in her the potential for a long term TARDIS traveller.

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

Six months (Off and On). So maybe 6 weeks’ worth of an actual research and writing (and rewriting).

Next up is my own TV series and this TV spec script was an excellent exercise in writing for this genre.

What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

In My Life (The Beatles)

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Time was my biggest obstacle… finding the time.

The second challenge was how to portray The Mara. It is obviously not my own creation, so I wanted to do justice to the original Mara stories with my version.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Acting, films, politics, history, rugby and beer (not necessarily in that order)

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I had my first feature screenplay analyzed not once, but twice. I was impressed by the depth and value of the criticism. So I did not hesitate to submit my Doctor Who script for analysis and I am pleasantly surprised in the end to have it recognized here. Thank you.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

It’s an old cliché but true: Write what you know. That’s why I picked Doctor Who for my first TV screenplay.

Be prepared to take a lot of criticism along the way. Your story (and your skills) will benefit from it.

What is your screenplay about?

The logline best answers this question for SUPERNATURAL – “Don’t Look Back” – Dean, Sam and Castiel take extreme measures to save an unusual and innocent woman from an evil curse. However, the crux of the episode is to introduce the new character of Emma De Luca, a woman as embroiled in the supernatural universe as Dean and Sam, and to lay the foundation for an epic love triangle between Dean and Emma and Castiel. Time for Supernatural to grow up, leave the overdone “bromances” in the dust, and throw a strong, ass-kicking and yet sweet and vulnerable woman into the mix. Sparks will fly!

How does this episode fit into the context of the show?

This episode is designed to be a season-opener, and carries no baggage other than our main characters and the Men of Letter’s Bunker set, which from what I understand was incredibly expensive to build and will surely be available should my story be a miracle baby and make it to the small screen.

Have you watched every single episode of SUPERNATURAL?

I have watched every single episode of Supernatural, more than once. Some I could write from memory, such as my personal fave, “The Man Who Would be King”, which was also the first episode I ever saw. I must confess, I had never even watched Supernatural until this past January. Honest to God. I was working so many hours at my bring-home-the-bacon job that I seldom had time to watch anything longer than a sitcom. I guess I owe my newfound writing obsession to a miserable cold that forced me to kick back and actually relax for a while. I stumbled on “The Man Who Would be King”, got completely sucked in, and the rest is history. I think any writer attempting to write for an established show MUST take the time and effort to study their quarry. So much of great writing is in the nuances, the little things about a character or a concept that make all the difference.

How would you describe this script in two words?

If I could describe this script in two words, they would be GAME CHANGER.

What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

The movie I have seen the most times in my life? That’s a hard one. I’d say it’s a toss up between any of the Lord of the Rings movies, all the Harry Potter movies, the entire Star Wars franchise, and “While You Were Sleeping”. Yes, that’s the romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman. Hey, I never said I was consistent. Or maybe I am…after all, I’m still mixing fantasy universes with romance.

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I worked on this particular episode for about six weeks, on and off. My mind tends to run ahead, and I also spent time outlining and making general notes on several more sequel episodes. The follow up to “Don’t Look Back” is titled “Timing is Everything”, and it too is complete and making the contest rounds with DLB as we speak. I’m halfway through the third episode titled “Out of the Blue”, and also have 6 other episodes that I’m outlining/simmering. No rest for the obsessed, I’m afraid.

How many stories have you written?

I have no idea how many stories I’ve written. So many were written only in my head, because I never had the time to commit them to paper. I did write a romance novel and a screenplay that did well in some contests about 10 years ago, but then I took a long break from writing, like ten years of break, during which I was raising my kids and working my ass off, and just trying to keep the wolf from the door. Sometimes life just gets in the way…and sometimes we let it. I wish now that I’d taken more time for ME. And that would have meant writing. But no use in lamenting the past. We can only look forward.

What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

My favorite song? That’s an interesting question. At the moment, it’s got to be Carly Pearce – “Every Little Thing”. Yes, it’s a country song. This is me, saying, and saying it proudly, that although I love almost all music, Country music holds the key to my heart.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

The only obstacle I faced in finishing “Don’t Look Back” was time. The story was simply bursting out of me, to the extent that I even dreamed about it at night, waking up at three a.m. and running to my computer to get the thoughts down before I could forget them. But time is an evil bitch, and with the deadline for so many important contests looming, I took a week of vacation time from my job to be able to give the writing the attention it deserved. Man, did I LOVE that week! All writing, all the time? Heaven.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Apart from writing, I am passionate about my kids, and living life to the fullest. I prioritize taking care of my health. I eat very well, don’t smoke or drink, hit the gym most every day, use a far-infrared sauna, and take a handful of supplements daily. As my wise grandma used to say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I learned about the festival on line. First, as a new writer, I know how important it is to get my work out there, everywhere I can. I also value the feedback, although I always rely on my own instinct and taste. First and foremost, I write for myself. Especially for Supernatural, that makes sense to me, since I am part of their largest demographic viewership. I also loved the idea of having professional actors table read my work. So cool.

My initial reaction to the feedback was, Wow! He really liked my work. I mean, when the first sentence you read says, “An exceptionally well-written episode of Supernatural…” you know you’re off to a great start! I did incorporate the advice to lower my page count, and it was a good lesson in evaluating what scenes were absolutely crucial to the story. I really did learn something, and isn’t that the point?

What is your screenplay based on the TV SERIES “Everybody Loves Raymond” about?

It’s about seeing what we all figured would happen eventually; that Marie’s constant meddling and being a nuisance in general, would lead to Debra’s insanity.

How does this episode fit into the context of the series?

I actually thought this plot line was a no-brainer for Debra. I would have done this myself given the same situation.

How would you describe this script in two words?

Sweet revenge

What TV show do you keep watching over and over again?

Seinfeld

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

Initially, it took a few days but I’ve tweaked it several times over the past several years.

How many stories have you written?

Three sit coms and one film.

What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

That’s a tough one. Sometimes I’ll be in a certain mood and one song fits it perfectly so I just keep playing it for hours. Once, during a late, dark night on a long and empty stretch of I99 in California, I listened to Chris Isack’s, Wicked Game for 6 hours.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Still not happy with a couple lines.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Animals, justice, cooking and dining out, creating fun and innovative entertainment, growth, experiencing unforgettable moments (CORRR-ny)

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I wanted to get some feedback on it and I thought people would enjoy it. Great feedback, thanks.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

In the words of Rodney Dangerfield as Thorton Melon, “Don’t go. It’s rough out there. Move back in with your parents. Let them worry about it.”

But if you insist, get your work out there, everywhere. Listen to criticism and learn what you can from it but don’t let it get to you. Remember, your writing is YOUR view on the subject so don’t compromise that. Go back to your earliest stuff and make it better. If you can’t do that, you either have the rare early masterpiece, or maybe you should consider another dream job. I’m sure every writer has heard to write what you know and what you care about. When you do, your writing becomes interesting, and for me, this is the the most important thing about a script. You can follow all the formulas you want but if it isn’t interesting then what’s the point. Conversely, if you have a very interesting story, you can break many, if not most formula rules–as long as you keep it interesting. Oh, and a very good agent wouldn’t hurt, either. The reality is you can be the best unknown writer since Shakespeare, but to be successful at this gig you will also need some luck and there’s a decent chance that some of your success will come from the old “who you know” variety. The fact that every year sharp, really well written shows get dropped while 2 Broke Girls remains on the air (I’m still convinced there’s serious network blackmail going on there) proves this point.

Lastly, A famous script doctor–who’s services I wasted $6,000 on–said that most writers better be prepared to stick it out for 10 years before they can make a living from writing. This Debby Downer also told the auditorium of almost 900 wanna-be writers that only a handful present would probably be successful and that many would lose friends and family because of their failures. In retrospect, I guess I should have waited until AFTER the 3 day seminar to quit my day job. The good news is that with webtv and all the new platforms, there are more opportunities than ever for writers. Just keep looking for these different avenues to showcase your work.

How does this screenplay fit into the context of this show?

When the idea for this story came to me, I knew it would be able to fit in nicely with the rest of the series. The conflict that arises from the three separate storylines converge in a way that I have definitely witnessed on the show before.

How would you describe this script in two words?

Trust family.

What TV show do you keep watching over and over again?

I have a problem with continuously re-watching, not only Modern Family, but also How I Met Your Mother. These two shows have great strengths in both writing comedy, and in writing characters we care about. I love seeing that in a comedy and hope to create something similar in my own writing.

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I started this screenplay in the Summer of 2016 while pursuing a Screenwriting Certificate from NYU. It took me about the entire summer, with the help of my professor and my fellow classmates, to establish a good first draft. From there it went through many revisions until it was in it’s strongest form by around the end of December.

How many stories have you written?

Although this is my first spec script that I have written, I’ve written and produced a number short films (one that has gone on to be nominated for Best Screenplay at some festivals), I’ve written a feature, and most recently I finished a Two-Act comedy play that will be produced and performed around the end of April.

What motivated you to write this screenplay?

Last Summer, before I even thought about writing this spec, I had been helping my father cut down trees around the yard. My mother begged him to hire professionals instead of doing it himself, but he thought it would save time and money. Well, a few days later as I was helping him cut down a rather large tree in our front yard, we miscalculated where it would fall and it ended up crashing into the top of our house. The A story of my script follows, almost exactly, this chain of events. After this occurred during the Summer, I had so many people telling that it would fit very well into an episode of Modern Family, so I decided to bring it to life.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

There were numerous obstacles that I faced when finishing this screenplay. It went through so many changes during my revision process and before even sending it to festivals, there was a point where I basically scrapped half of it and started over. The reason for this was due to the three complex storylines that intertwine throughout the script. I knew where I wanted them to go and how I wanted it all to end, however, it was getting them all to that point that had me scratching my head and scrapping rewrite after rewrite. In the end though, I feel that it came together very nicely.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I really enjoy doing anything that has to do with music. I play a number of instruments, including guitar and a little bit of piano, but I have recently got into the habit of trying to learn even more instruments. Most recently, I have picked up the drums and the trumpet.

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

Initially the biggest thing that made me want to enter this festival was the recorded performance of our written scripts if we were to win. After receiving my notes from the festival though, I would say that I now have two big reasons to submit to this festival again in the future. The notes I received were very well thought out and helped me immensely during my most recent revision of the script. The festival put a lot of effort into making the notes as thorough and helpful as possible.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

The best advice I could give other writers would be to power through. There are times where you might think that you need to take a break from your writing and step back, maybe giving yourself an hour or a week to think about the story and your characters before you continue. I know in my experience though, that an hour turns into five and a week can turn into a month. If you sit down and write out your story, no matter how terrible it might seem to you, just know that the revision will always be better. Revisions can’t happen though, unless you actually write the script.
