SYNOPSIS:

Genre: Thriller, Political Drama

An inventor with a plan that would replace oil must survive while forces in China, Canada and the United States vie for the technology.

What is your screenplay about?

The world is becoming a much more complex place. 20/20: Search for Independence is the story about Jeff Bekk, a young inventor who’s searching for his own validation by developing software to drive a project known as SEATech. Suddenly he’s left to finish the ICCCE invention started by his grandfather and search for the truth about his Icelandic grandfathers death.

Meanwhile, relying on Jeff’s SEATech software, China and Canada covertly prepare to eliminate oil sands greenhouse gas emissions undermining the future of major U.S. oil refineries and an unsuspecting U.S. government in the middle of a Presidential election.

As Jeff works on the SEATech project he “secretly” works on finishing the ICCCE prototype that can replace oil. His gambles to honour his grandfather put his grandfather’s legacy and ranch at risk. The deeper he gets, the more he realizes he must reassess who he can trust as he struggles to survive as global forces vying to steal “his” technology, guaranteeing their global energy dominance.

On a personal note, my grandparents are Scandinavian. I have always been fascinated by what countries with the climate changes they face, have, and continue to achieve. Maybe, colder air is better for the braincells.

What genres does your screenplay fall under?

20/20 is a techno thriller with strong political elements as major super powers fight for Jeff’s invention to achieve national security interests and energy dominance. Some have said it could be a political thriller.

Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

This story is about the unintended consequences of well intended actions. We live in an increasing interconnected world where decisions or interests in an isolated desert are communicated as timely as decisions or demands on Wall Street. This is a world where you can push a button in a downtown village in Alberta that has catastrophic effects in Africa.

Jeff wants to see his grandfather’s invention realized and his obsession to realize his grandfather’s legacy nearly costs him his grandfather’s ranch. Worse yet, without a serious assessment, the invention in Alberta, could destroy an economy and a country half way around the globe.

How would you describe this script in two words?

Do Right. Be Selfless. Or in a few more words, do the right thing.

What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

Early on – The Firm; when I started to more seriously study story there was Casablanca, Schindler’s List, In the Heat of the Night, A Time to Kill, A Bronx Tale and Thunderheart. And, I have been lucky enough to meet Norman Jewison, one of the world’s greatest storyteller directors.

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

Total elapsed time, is more than a couple of years. It started as a germ of an idea and grew from there. Very few of my stories are short term ventures and they become deep stories of thought and reflection about me and the world I live in.

How many stories have you written?

I’ve lost count. I do know I have two techno thriller novels published, Deadly Invisible Enemies: Evil in the Air and Deadly Invisible Enemies: Hunt for Evil, and I’ve just finished the first draft of the third novel, Deadly Invisible Enemies: Evil Resurrection. I’ve also written a multi award winning miniseries, a web-digital series, two tv pilots including a project pitch/bible with 5 season and character arcs and at least eight award wining screenplays.

What motivated you to write this screenplay?

I wanted to explore the consequences a decision or special interest in one part of the world has on another part of the world. I landed on the idea of the impact an invention could have on the world. I wanted to move beyond a story that focus on one dimension, like the environment vs oil. As I already said, the world is increasingly interconnected. What is good for one region or group in a community or country may be catastrophic to another. In this story Jeff slowly begins to realize ICCCE is catastrophic—even destroying his girlfriend’s country. He realizes he cannot rely on anyone to figure out what to do—he must discover the facts, his truths and make a decision.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Unintended consequences is a tough thing to make personal and yet globally catastrophic. As for the subject matter of oil/energy markets, that is also a complex matter as others who have attempted it, such as Syriana have found out. People line up at the gas pumps and rage about the price of gas as they watch prices plummet half way around the world. It is a world of unintended consequences. Efforts to lower the price of gas, lead to an unexplained increase. That even made the story more compelling for me.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and the study of the human condition. Why do people or countries do what they do? Why I react in a certain way to a situation? Often these worlds intersect at some point and the germ of a story is formed. That is what becomes my next potential quest or project. The journey of self discovery and a potential revelation I can share through a story.

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I like writing. And I like writing thrillers. I would love to see one of my stories up on the big screen but hearing the story performed has also been a great experience for me and industry associates I work with. I have entered this festival several times and received feedback that has helped me improve the story I want to tell. I have also entered other competitions, like WILDSound many times, received incredible feedback that raised the quality of the story – to the point I garnered a professional reading of my racial drama screenplay titled “Hope is Not a Black and White Rainbow.”

Get to know writer George Lewis:

1. What is your screenplay about?

Mercy is a story that looks into the past and the future through the experiences of a man who wants to end racism and in doing so he becomes instrumental in electing the first African American President of the United States.

2. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

Mercy is a story, a lesson from our history that brings us closer to the enduring values inherent in our shared humanity. Mercy reminds us that although we have engaged in and witnessed acts of unspeakable inhumanity in the past, we are not beyond redemption. The powerful stories of these characters transcends the past and lifts their lives to a level that redeems them and others from the of racism and gives us hope.

3. How would you describe this story in one sentence?

Mercy is a story about Jerome White colloquially known as the Black Time Traveller who goes back and forth in history where he searches for the Imperial Wizard of KKK with support from friends Rose and Trey who protect him in the present during his forays into the past. Bringing him close to death, history intersects with the rise of a young black Senator and the modern day Wizard who are both headed towards the highest office in the land. The Black Time Traveller will play an incredible role in determining who gets elected.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

The Fifth Element

5. This is a very tight, emotionally engaging and fun screenplay. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I first started writing Mercy under another title in 2008 and as it went through many iterations of the years. As the story changed, so did the title until I arrived at this story and the title Mercy.

6. How many stories have you written?

I have written a dozen stories and two feature length screenplays.

7. What motivated you to write this screenplay?

Originally, the story came from experiencing the aftermath of my younger brother’s death from racism and Jim Crow laws that denied him medical care that could have possibly saved his life. The screenplay started out to be about that part of my life but evolved to include much more.

8. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

There were many. First, there was a steep learning curve and although I wanted to tell this story, I had resistance to sharing it through a lens that was powerful, but not necessarily entirely from my personal story. I had to surrender myself to the story that wanted to be written, still drawing from my experiences in unexpected ways. Another obstacle was my own self-doubt and insecurity on so many levels (“who am I to be writing this?” to fear that “hostile forces would find a way to defeat my efforts”). Medical problems arose like Congestive Heart Failure, Sarcoidosis an autoimmune disorder, and Depression. My fiancé left me, my dreams seemed to collapse around me and I moved in with one of my children, thinking…I’m done! I give up! There’s no chance! Lord come take me now.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about politics, mental health, films, story telling, the arts like Ballet, symphony and travel.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I loved the sense of openness and the feedback was simply first rate. I felt like I improved each time I resubmitted my project. The criticism was always right on point and made suggestions I could immediately put to use in making the story stronger.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Just don’t give up! And, pray! There will be challenges and obstacles but this is all part of the process since the writing process evolves over an extended period of time, setbacks and advances should be expected. I learned was a combination of patience and “how to handle the highs and lows” that would determine my success.

Get to know the writer Joshua Collins:

1. What is your screenplay about?

In short, the film is about a lethal obsession and how it can alter a persons perception of their world. As well as a very uncovered subject matter(in film)–aero-technology.

But overall, the experience might leave (hopefully) wondering/discussing idea’s that have never crossed their minds regarding aero-technology and energy sources.

2. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

Considering the state of our world’s condition and the struggle we find ourselves trying to right a very evident problem, the film is a different look at what is more than possible (via-solutions). It also gives light to the ‘why’ on more than one occasion, but utilizing a fun and impacting format to do so. Rather than a documentary this film could speak with people of all ages by way of classic film-making.

The film could open up doors for many conversations that just aren’t happening, and that’s sad.

3. How would you describe this story in one sentence?

The ARV can only be experienced and yet hard to believe its happening.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

There isn’t just one, there’s never just one:

KUBRIKS 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

5. This is a very tight, emotionally engaging and fun screenplay. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

Research took well over a year, but the writing took about two months.

6. How many stories have you written?

A lot. A lot, a lot.

7. What motivated you to write this screenplay?

I was blown away that the sci-fi/drama genre was lacking in anything that dealt with a real human problem–sustainable energy source.

Also that many films that ever dealt with anything extra-terrestrial based were far too cliché and over-done. This film, THE ARV, finally gives a real life look at the reality of such a complex subject matter.

8. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Having to learn quantum physics on an elementary level to create the real dialogue the story contains. One cannot simply make it up or just learn ‘key phrases’. A lot of scientists would go see this film and the last thing I’d want is to be laughed at. So, having to learn the principles of General relativity, Newton’s Laws of Motion etc…

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Directing, directing, acting, music, life, Buddhism. And directing.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I was drawn to the festival based on its format. Hearing your screenplay read aloud by actors for the first time is a big plus.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Humans need stories to understand ourselves but at the same time to relinquish control of their perception’s. A writers job is to be responsible for what we give to them (the audience)…and in hopes that their perception is somewhat or altogether altered.

Get to know writer Gary Makin:

1. What is your screenplay about?

It’s set in a future where people rely on technology too much, but everything is hackable. A future with no privacy – not even inside your own mind. A future where corporations rule, and in this case, play God.

2. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

It’s a very visual, suspenseful story with strong action scenes and some cool ideas. You’d definitely get a good trailer out of it.

3. How would you describe this story in one sentence?

In a future Los Angeles, a homicide detective’s investigation into the attempted murder of a young woman becomes the ultimate case of identity theft when a powerful corporation is implicated.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Probably Raiders of the Lost Ark – I watched it every Sunday morning as a kid for several months. Blade Runner is my favourite film though.

5. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I wrote an earlier version in 2002 – it had a different plot, but some of the same ideas; such as 3D printed cars and guns, which have since come true. I wrote notes on this version in 2006, an outline in 2008, and a first draft in 2010.

6. How many stories have you written?

I started writing spec scripts for TV; five of those, plus three screenplays more recently.

7. What motivated you to write this screenplay?

Minority Report was coming out, and I wanted to write something similar. Something neo-noir in the science fiction genre.

Plus, getting an agent or winning contests with teleplays for existing TV shows was probably going to be harder.

8. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Procrastination and perfectionism – a killer combination. Some personal issues also got in the way.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Movies, science and technology, geopolitics, cups of tea.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I actually entered just for the feedback – I didn’t expect to win. The feedback was all positive, so I was obviously pleased.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Watch movies, read movies, read about writing movies.

Treat it like a 9 to 5 (if you can), enter contests (it’s probably the best way in if you don’t know anyone in the industry), take classes (some are free), and get feedback (coverage if you can afford it).

Matthew Toffolo interviews Debbie Bolsky:

Matthew: What is your screenplay about?

Debbie: It’s the story of Jessie Stiles as she starts her journey through the umpire ranks to achieve her one goal in life – becoming a major league baseball umpire. But there’s one little problem – no woman’s ever broken through the stainless-steel ceiling of the MLB.

This dramedy with scatterings of romance follows Jessie as she fights her way toward achieving her goal – she is a woman who, not always successfully, tries to balance her life with her dreams. Interspersed throughout the script are interviews with real people involved in the game of baseball.

Matthew: Why should this script be made into a movie?

Debbie: It’s a good story that I think people will enjoy and it’s got some very strong roles especially for women.

Matthew: How long have you been writing stories?

Debbie: I’ve been writing since I was a kid but screenplays and stage plays pretty consistently for the past 15 years.

Matthew: What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Debbie: The Philadelphia Story and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Matthew: What artists would you love to work with?

Debbie: There are just too many to list and it would also depend upon the project.

Matthew: How many stories/screenplays have you written?

Debbie: I have over 10 screenplays and stage plays at different stages and that doesn’t count the ones I tossed in a drawer never to see the light of day again.

Matthew: Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

Debbie: I have no set routine. I’m the most undisciplined person in the world so when I start working on something I have to give myself a deadline. Then I’ll take many walks through the park and on the beach and think and talk to myself and make a lot of notes. When I have a handle on it I’ll pull out my laptop at home or in the library and start writing because after all, I have a deadline to meet.

Matthew: Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Debbie: Writing, baseball, friends and politics.

Matthew: That’s funny. Those probably would be my answers to that question too!

Matthew: What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival?

Debbie: I read about WILDsound in an email so I looked at their website, watched a couple of the readings then decided to submit to them.

Matthew: Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Debbie: It would be presumptuous of me to give anyone advice so all I’ll say is so long as you enjoy it, keep writing, and rewriting, and rewriting, and rewriting…
