Get to know writer Danny M. Howell:

1. What is your screenplay about?

“The Paper Route” is the story of Paul, an almost-sixteen-year-old who discovers a chance to escape a world very few people really get away from: the mean poverty of a small town in the hill country of Indiana, where every day is a struglgle to survive, between his harsh family life and a town full of dangerous characters. The rub is that the price of escape is leaving behind Paul’s little brother, Brian, who worships him and depends on him for safety and love.

2. Why should this script be made into a movie?

‘The Paper Route” draws young viewers into a world more compelling, and yet more bizarre and dangerous, than anything they have ever seen, a world where people are both dangerous and courageous, cruel and kind, and yet a story with memorably hilarious moments. It’s safe to say you’ve never seen a world quite like that of “The Paper Route” before on film, with even the minor characters so unique and vivid that they stay emblazoned in the memory.

3. How long have you been writing stories?

I have always written short stories, but I began writing screenplays in 2001.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Groundhog day — perhaps the most spiritual film I know, I’ve seen it over a hundred times.

5. What artists would you love to work with?

Bill Murray, Clint Eastwood, Kevin Bacon, Simon Baker, Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Lauren Graham, Eddie Izzard, Gregg Henry, Gary Cole, Chris Eigeman, Taylor Nichols, Parker Posey

6. How many stories/screenplays have you written?

Four screenplays, half a dozen short stories

7. What motivated you to write this screenplay?

All my writing is about escape — psychological more than physical–from a world of quicksand, and this story was closest to my heart, a relationship between brothers that has much personal meaning for me.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

I imagine myself if a specific place and time, inhabiting a character I know intimatelyn and I let that character move, react, and speak with her or his own voice, mannerisms, and direction.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

My beloved wife and beautiful children, Daniel who is 8 and Catherine 5, and my guitars.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Festival?

There’s nothing like it — an absolutely nurturing process, with the absolute best written feedback of any contest, immediate on-line access to table reads of dozens of fine scripts, and the thrill of seeing a screenplay so dear to me come to life thtrough the voices of professional actors.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Let your stories, your characters, and your dialogue emerge from you, by becoming one with person, place and time.
